This instalment of the "Vinta Plays" EP series celebrates the repertoire of accordionist Elisabeth Melchior (1926-1999) from the small hamlet of Walk, in the Wallonia region of Belgium. She grew up immersed in traditional music, with a father and two uncles who played diatonic button accordion. She performed her first accordion concert at the age of 6. She also absorbed her father's extensive repertoire of traditional dance music, and by her teen years she was playing regularly for local events, performing a mixture of traditional tunes and popular contemporary dance music on the chromatic accordion. Due to her vast knowledge of traditional accordion tunes and old songs from Wallonia, she was a gold mine for ethnomusicologists during the folk music revival of the 1970s, notably Françoise Lempereur, who helped bring her to perform in the United States in 1976.
