We're heading south of the border this month (the Canadian border, that is) with a collection of tunes from the repertoire of Kentucky fiddler Emma Lee Dickerson (1923-2001).
Dickerson learned to play the fiddle in childhood from her uncle as well as other local musicians. By her teens she was playing for dances and community events as well as playing in contests, and she was one of the few women documented to have competed at fiddler's conventions in the 1930s.
The sources for these tunes are field recordings by Barbara Kunkle, collected in Greenup County in 1973. Many of the tunes in Dickerson's repertoire were ones we'd heard before, but with her own personal spin added to them. We hope you enjoy our interpretations of these tunes!
