about

A collection of tunes from the repertoire of French (Gironde) fiddler Marcel Lagardère. Born in 1906 in the region of Saint-Michel-de-Castelnau, Lagardère worked as a share-cropper while also playing fiddle for dances and weddings.
Despite some formal training on his instrument when he first learned to play during his teen years, Lagardère's preference was for creating a powerful sound with a strong rhythmic pulse rather than perfecting his technical prowess. He was soon playing for large crowds of dancers, and most often performed as a soloist. He learned his tunes exclusively by ear, and his repertoire included rondos, congos, polkas, scottisches, mazurkas, and waltzes.
Our first exposure to Marcel Lagardère came from our friends Arnaud Bibonne and Camille Raibaud, on their album "En Cadència," a celebration of Gascony's traditional music. Thank you!
The charming simplicity of Lagardère's tunes allows for maximum emphasis to be placed on pulse, groove, and the connection between musicians and dancers.
