about

A collection of tunes composed by Canadian fiddler, Oliver Schroer (1956-2008). Oliver is most known for his unusual and adventurous solo fiddle repertoire (as heard on his albums Camino and O2), and for his big fiddle party/world music band, the Stewed Tomatoes. With this EP, however, we wanted to feature some of his lesser known tunes: jigs, polkas and waltzes that he composed with an elegant simplicity and a perfect dance groove. In keeping with the theme of our “Vinta Plays” project, these are dance tunes that lend themselves well to jamming among friends. With the exception of Dance for a New Beginning, Oliver had never released these tunes, and many of them were written in the last months of his life. Emilyn was fortunate to study with him in her teenage years and he became a close friend and mentor to her near the end of his life. In 2007 they recorded a double album together, “Smithers”, which features 59 tunes composed by Oliver for his fiddle students in Smithers with Emilyn accompanying on piano. We thought it fitting to feature his music this month, as June is a month when Olitunes (as they’re known by his friends) are often celebrated - his birthday was June 18, and he performed his last concert on his tour of this planet on June 5, 2008 before passing away from Leukemia just a few weeks later.
